April 1975 stands as one of the worst days in the history of Cambodia. That is the day the Khmer Rouge soldiers overthrew the corrupt regime of Lon Lon. Literally, overnight, the whole population of Cambodia was thrown into the streets and were told to move to the countryside under the ruse that America was going to bomb the cities. Once the population was in the country the Khmer Rouge tortured and starved everyone. Those that did not die from starvation were worked to death. Millions of people simply disappeared never to be heard from again. This is the background of Seng Ung's story. Somehow, Seng managed to survive and make it to America where he has become the quintessential American success story

I Survived the Killing Fields The True Life Story of a Cambodian Refugee eBook Seng Kok Ung Reviews
This book was one of the best books I have read this year. This mans story is truly heartbreaking and inspiring. Would read agin, and hope to visit his restaurant in the future.
This book summarises 3 years 8 month and 20 days of agony in just 3 hours. It is very hard to believe that so much horror could span so long. It just escapes my ability to comprehend the arduous life he (the author) has endured. As an oversea chinese myself, I find it admirable that despite all the past nightmare in his adoptive country (Cambodia), he still maintains to cling to his cambodian identity.
LOVELY to find this book on . A factual depiction of the Khmer rouge a must read for all
.
Could not put this down! Amazing story! I have a better umderstanding of what my boyfriend's family went though during the Cambodian civil war.
As one of the greatest atrocities of recent times the story of the strife in Cambodia is relatively unknown. While in Seattle I had the honor of meeting the author in his wonderful restaurant. What a terrific act he has done to present his experience for the world to read. The telling of his experience cannot be easy to tell. Sam's personal accounting of his events provide a reminder to all of humanity and it's uplifting to see what he has achieved in his life. I highly recommend this book for all to read!
Author did a very detailed and superb job telling his story.."I Survived the Killing Fields" had a twist of romance, humor, suspense and drama all in one..As an avid reader (especially pertaining to history), I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the atrocities and treacherous condition that the Cambodians faced during the Khmer Rouge Regime..For someone whos English is his fourth language (I believed Mr. Ung knows 3 other languages if I am not mistaken), it was extremely well written and not exaggerated as I felt with other books in regards to this subject..Next to "Mayada One Woman Survival Under Saddam Hussein", "I Survived The Killing Fields" by Mr. Ung and Mr. McElroy, is easily one of my favorite history/memoir read of all time.
What a story. I've met the author and enjoy his restaurant.
Great read for anybody or offsprings who came from Cambodia during the war
